SPAFFORD TOWN BOARD MEETING :: JUNE 10, 2004
EXCERPT: 5 min
GG: Grace Grenga (Chairman of Spafford Republican Party, 2 past terms as Town Councilor)
JB: Joyce Barnett (Spafford Party member, newly elected to Town Councilor position on Spafford Town Board)
GRACE GRENGA: Okay, can I finally get the chance to address Joyce Barnett? Joyce, before you open your mouth, could you please get your facts straight.
In this last letter again is not correct. I am sick of you trashing our town. You were elected to this board to serve this town, not to trash it.
Now, in this last letter you talk about the golden rule. Is everybody supposed to follow this but you? Because you certainly don't follow it.
A lot of people have an opinion about our town...(can't hear) Your problem is that you lie so much you actually believe your own lies. I wish you would cut it out. That's how I feel (can't hear).
JOYCE BARNETT: Are you going to qualify any of that statement?
GG: Qualify what?
JB: Well you just called me a liar. What did I lie about?
GG: You lied about so many things, it would take forever... Now we can go back to the physical assault. Now that was proven it was not true. What you said about the Republican Party in this town was not true.
JB: Are you referring to my last Guest Column letter? I was very careful to not mention any particular person.
GG: But you did mention the Republican Party.
JB: No, I don't think I did. The very sad thing about what you're saying, Grace, is that column was written for everyone to look inside their own heart and conscience. And the fact that you thought I was talking about you is tragic.
GG: You specifically said the Spafford Republican Party. I'm the Chairman of that Party and what you said was not true. You can look in your heart all you want.
JB: You have your own perception of things, and other people have their own perception.
JB: You have a very specific opinion. I respect your opinion. Why don't we just leave it at that?
GG: I'm not the only one. You've got to stop trashing this town.
JB: A lot of other people have a different opinion. That's why I'm sitting here right now. I was elected to this position. I will be here for 4 years. Coming here and insulting me like that is not helping this town... If you want to talk about what happened at that polling place on Election night it is a disgrace to the United States of America.
GG: Why?
JB: Because of the behavior of the election inspectors. And why would you even be talking to me about that if it wasn't something that had consequences to you?
GG: I have a letter from the Board of Elections saying that they do not believe one thing you said in that letter.
JB: Then if you believe that I don't even know why you're bringing that up, 7 - 8 months later.
GG: You asked for examples, I'm giving them to you.
JB: Why now Grace?
GG: I'm giving you examples.
JB: Well, that's a really old example.... I really do respect your opinion. Why don't we leave it at that?
GG: Stop it. I want to see you to start working with the other members of the board.
JB: It's not personal at all. There's nothing I would like more than to work with these people.
GG: Then do it.
JB: Let's see what happens. I've been very respectful tonight of you in spite of what you've said about me. And I hope you respect that.
Widener (sp.?) speaks to Grace.
