History
of Borodino
By Janice Beaman
On July 22, 1902 the Legg Block burned down. This included the Churchill & Eadie store and Post office. In 1904 the M.E. Church Society added a belfry to its church. On April 9, 1912 the Grange 1272 of Borodino was organized. The members met in the present Grange building, then the Town Hall and purchased the same property in 1919 for the sum of six hundred dollars. On August 10, 1927 an easement was granted to the Marcellus Lighting Co. for the installation of power lines, and poles at the center of the village. Electric lights were installed in the parsonage and M.E. Church in 1929. By 1938 the Borodino Band concerts were gone, the automobile carried the activity away from the village. The Hotel stood abandoned. The postal service was conducted from the home of Howard Patterson. In December of 1846 (mean 1946?) a fire destroyed the old hardware store and hotel. The owners at the time were Mr. and Mrs. Reginal Nodine, present owner of the property is now Frank J. Marcheterre. In June of 1954 the volunteer fire company was incorporated as the Borodino Fire Department. James Burlton was named as chief, and 32 volunteers completed the company located on Nunnery Road. In 1976 a house located on the northern corner of East Lake Road and Rose Hill Road was moved by the owners Mr. and Mrs. Havenmeyer to it's new location on Eibert Road. The Borodino property was then converted into a park by the M.E. Church society. Today Borodino remains a small rural community. The corner IGA store no longer has a gas pump. (It is now closed and vacant.) There is a liquor store and a "mini-mall" owed by Frank J. Marcheterre (this is now closed and vacant.), one two-dwelling apartment building which is presently declared unfit for occupancy by the Onondaga County Health Department, a M.E. Church, a Town Hall, a volunteer Fire Department, a restaurant, a golf course, and the Grange building. Sheep are still raised by Bill and Ruth Vinzant, but the bulk of livestock is dairy cattle. The mail arrives daily from the Skaneateles Post office. The majority of the residents are registered Republicans. Borodino is in the Skaneateles school district. Notes: This property was purchased by the Town of Spafford from HUD, and demolished. Currently a committee of interested citizens are building a Veterans Memorial park on it's once- empty lot. Fesko's IGA was purchased by the Town of Spafford, and demolished in 2003. |
