History of Borodino By Janice Beaman

The history of Borodino parallels with the history of New York State. Borodino originated as, and remains an agricultural community. There is a road in Spafford by the name of Bucktail Road. It was named after Captain Roundy who was an active member of the Bucktail Party. With 278 Turnpike Co. in 1828, Borodino was accessible from the Cherry Valley Turnpike, Route 20, by traveling down Rose Hill Road.

Town records reflect the "poor fund."  The town was responsible for its own ill and down and out residents. There is also mention of an orphan who went to the lowest bidder year after year. State welfare programs were still yet to come. During the 2nd Great Awakening in 1830 Borodino was also experiencing the arrival of the Church of the Latter Day Saints mission.

Skaneateles opened its railroad in 1840 which provided personal and crop transportation to other areas. New York State rail roads were uniform in 1850. 1860 brought the Republican party formation to Borodino. Borodino also held a temperance convention in 1868.

Borodino experienced a decline in population along with the rest of rural New York State as urban areas expanded. The telephone's arrival in 1891 in Borodino follows the New York trend. Although the first Grange appeared in New York State in 1874, the Spafford Farmers Club was organized in 1875 followed by the Grange in 1912.

Electricity came to Borodino in 1927 from Marcellus Lighting Co. The arrival of the automobile further reduced Borodino's activity. Borodino didn't appear to be a trend setting place, but a strong rural community with common interests that continues today.
