RE:
Town of Spafford, Onondaga County, New York
Dear Congressman Walsh:

This morning, I spoke with Pat Gavin to explain the enclosed material. For clarity, copies of the same information are being forwarded by postal mail. Your Syracuse office has had the same material for quite awhile, but they seem to rely on the Town Supervisor (Gordon Ireland) to resolve the problems. In fact, Ireland appears to be protecting the slumlord (Frank Marcheterre).

Over the past four years, dilapidated structures and related environmental concerns were featured on television and in the Post-Standard “Clean Sweep” series.

The photo essay area is across the street (Route 41) from the oil spilled HUD house that you were instrumental in having cleaned up and removed. That site is now being developed as a VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK. Twenty thousand dollars has already been raised by donations for this beautification project. Sadly, the HUD site is located directly across from the pictured slum area.

Here again, the monies for the pictured “Gazebo” were garnered through private fundraising efforts without assistance from the Town Supervisor. Ironically, in the end, Ireland takes credit for Town improvements.

Property values and the quality of life in this township are being diminished by the Town Supervisor’s failure to pursue demolition and cleanup of abandoned properties town wide. Due to this neglect and “foot-dragging”, the blight is rapidly expanding in several directions. In addition, numerous oversight agencies have been made aware of the problems in the Town of Spafford, yet they fail to act on these slum areas.

Please use your good office to contact County Executive Pirro and Supervisor Ireland to warn them that their inaction is threatening the Skaneateles and Otisco watersheds and ultimately the health and safety of thousands of area residents.

Sincerely,

Peter Pirnie
