Post-Standard,
The (Syracuse, NY) October 25, 2001 THE FIRE DEPARTMENT DONATES $1,000 FROM PANCAKE BREAKFAST FOR THE PARK. Fred Chappell Guest columnist The town of Spafford
Veterans Memorial Committee, which is raising money for a memorial
to veterans of the Spafford area, took a large step toward
its de- velopment goal when the Borodino Volunteer Fire Department
contributed $1,000.
This generous donation was a share of the proceeds from their pancake
breakfast at the firehouse in Borodino on July 22. The Spafford Town Board decided to construct the veterans
memorial when land became available at the intersection of Route
41 and Nunnery Road, in Borodino, thanks to the Housing and urban
Development offices in Syracuse and Buffalo.
The property was acquired by HUD, then cleared, graded and seeded. On
May 8, ownership was transferred to the town.
The Veterans Committee was formed by the town board to raise
funds and plan the memorial with a monument, plaque with
dedication message, a tall flagpole with the Stars and Stripes, and
appropriate landscaping.
The land is under further preparation, with landfill and grading, for
construction work in the spring of 2002.
The memorial fund reached $3,874 in October, budget officer
Tom Chartrand said at a recent town board meeting.
The committee continues to seek donations and corporate sponsors.
Donations may be sent to Spafford Veterans Memorial
Fund, Town of Spafford, 1984 Route 174, Skaneateles, NY 13152.
Checks should be made out to the Spafford Veterans Memorial
Fund.
