COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT FUNDING REQUESTS SENT TO HUD THE COUNTY LEGISLATURE RECOMMENDS $584,000 FOR VARIOUS MUNICIPAL PROJECTS IN THE WESTERN SUBURBS.

   John Mariani Staff writer

The Onondaga County Legislature has approved $584,000 in federal Community Development funds to help pay for projects in nine municipalities in the western suburbs.

They'll be sent by July 15 to the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development for review, said Linda DeFichy, administrator of the county Community Development Division. HUD is supposed to give its final OK by Sept. 1, DeFichy said.

The legislature, based largely on recommendations of a steering committee, endorsed 18 of the 41 projects submitted by towns and villages countywide to Community Development. The public has 30 days to comment in writing to the county.

Here are the west suburban projects to be sent to Washington, as well as those that didn't make the cut:

Town of Camillus

The town would get $75,000 to install 1,070 feet of drainage in the 100 blocks of Scott and Gillespie avenues and repave roadways. The town had sought $100,000 to help finance the $144,900 project.

The steering committee rejected a town request for $42,770 to help finance a handicapped-accessible playground at Stonehedge Elementary School.

Village of Camillus

The village would get $51,000 to rebuild about 750 feet of Maple Drive, including new pavement, drainage and curbing. The $302,000 project received a $75,000 Community Development grant last year.

The steering committee turned down a request for $100,000 to help finance a $125,000 project on Haney Road.

Town of Elbridge

The town would get $45,000 to help low-income residents hook up to the proposed Jack's Reef water line, which the town is promoting with Van Buren and Lysander. Van Buren also would get $45,000 for the same purpose; Lysander, $37,500.

The district itself failed to get Community Development funding last year, but federal and state lawmakers chipped in.

The project awaits state Legislature action to allow the Onondaga County Water Authority to build the pipeline.

The committee turned down Elbridge's request for $100,000 to help extend a waterline up Route 5 west of the village of Elbridge.

Village of Elbridge

The committee also denied a village request for $18,223 to help finance a computer media station at the Elbridge Free Library. The project was not eligible, the committee said.

Geddes

The town's request for $49,575 to help finance replacement of a pavilion at its athletic field complex on Fay Road failed to gain steering committee approval.

The committee also turned down the town's $90,825 request for a pedestrian-access project on Fay Road, saying the area didn't meet low income requirements.

Jordan

The village would get half of the $100,000 it sought for sidewalk replacement. The remaining $50,000 is on Community Development's alternate project list.

The steering committee rejected the village's request for $100,000 to help rehabilitate North Beaver Street.

Village of Marcellus

The village of Marcellus would get $100,000 to build new drainage, curbs and pavement on South Street. The $425,000 project also is due to receive another $300,000 through Rep. James Walsh.

The steering panel turned down the village's proposal for $40,000 to improve the Main Street streetscape.

Town of Onondaga

Onondaga would get $100,000 toward a $125,000 drainage improvement project in Nedrow.

Solvay

The village would get $73,200 to help replace sidewalks on Hazard Street. The steering committee denied a request for $88,050 for sidewalk replacement on Hall and Palmer avenues.

Spafford  ^

A $90,000 grant is earmarked so Spafford can tear down three decrepit buildings at Routes 41 and 174 in Borodino and develop the lots into a community recreation area.

Village of Tully

The village sought, and got approval for, $100,000 in water supply system redundancy improvements. The village's current back-up well site on Lincoln Avenue is a shallow (10 feet deep) well dug in the 1890s.
