FOOD BANK, BEAVER LAKE AND SU ARE AMONG RECIPIENTS OF JOHN BEN SNOW MONEY.

The John Ben Snow Foundation and Memorial Trust will donate more than $1 million this year to about 30 organizations, most of them in Central New York.

As they make donation decisions, the two organizations and the Snow family think about education and improving the lives of students, especially in Snow's native Pulaski, said Marshall Marshall, superintendent of the Pulaski school district. "This funding is significant in its own right. It's real money for kids. It established a culture of giving to our seniors," Marshall said.

Pulaski Junior-Senior High School gave 88 scholarships worth $107,000 last year. About $70,000 came from the John Ben Snow Foundation and Memorial Trust, the superintendent said.

John Ben Snow, an F.W. Woolworth executive and newspaper publisher, established the foundation in 1948 to support his belief in investing in people, particularly young people in Northern and Central New York. In 1975, two years after his death, a memorial trust was developed as a provision of his will. The trust gives money to organizations in New York and across the nation.

Ann Scanlon, program officer since 1991, said the two organizations normally donate to nonprofit groups that have specific programs geared toward education and human services. This year, they also contributed to technology and environmental programs related to education.

The grants usually are distributed among six program areas: arts and culture, community development, education, environment, historic preservation and journalism.

Foundation grants approved for Central New York organizations include:
