SUPERVISOR TO MEET WITH STATE DOT OFFICIALS TO DISCUSS COMPLAINTS. Sara Errington Staff writer Complaints about truck traffic on highways near Skaneateles Lake are getting some attention. Skaneateles Supervisor Bill Pavlus said at the Oct. 16 town board meeting that he planned to meet with state Department of Transportation officials this week to talk about truck traffic. The meeting is in response to the town board's recommendation that the state study expanding its interstate highway system so that trucks don't use smaller highways near the lake. Pavlus said he received a letter from Jon P. Edinger, a DOT regional director, inviting him to set up a meeting, after the board sent its recommendation to the Department of Transportation. Spafford Supervisor Gordon Ireland also will be invited to attend, because much of Route 41 is in Spafford. At the urging of residents, the Spafford Town Board passed a resolution recommending trash trucks from downstate use interstate highways instead of local highways that run close to the lake. A representative of the Tri-County Skaneateles Lake Association also is invited. Local contributions to pension plan triple Pension costs increase: Local contributions to the state pension plan for municipal employees will nearly triple in 2004, town budget officer Bridgett Winkelman said. The town is budgeting more than $130,000 for 2004. The cost was $48,000 this year and less than $10,000 in 2002. Municipalities across the county are struggling with high pension expenses this year. Stock market declines and a poor economy have driven down the value of the state pension fund. "It's going to be like that for at least five years," Winkelman said. Passports available at town hall: The town has processed five passport applications since Sept. 29. Skaneateles is one of 12 towns in the county that will start accepting passport applications by year's end. "It's very appreciated by the people, being able to come in here for that," Town Clerk Janet Aaron said.
