TAINTED SOIL AT BORODINO STORE SITE

   Sara Errington Staff writer

Excavators digging up soil around the former Gulino store in Borodino found no underground tanks, but plenty of contaminated soil, Spafford Supervisor Gordon Ireland said at the Nov. 7 town board meeting.

"If you took a handful of that dirt, especially if you had a mud ball of it and broke it apart, you could really smell the gasoline," he said. Several loads of earth were hauled away to be cleaned, and town officials are waiting for test results.

The town is trying to acquire the property for a community center, but doesn't want it if it poses a liability risk, Ireland said.

"If they give us a clean bill of health, then we can sit down and talk about ownership," Ireland said.

In 2001, the town received $90,000 in Community Development funds to help build a community center.

Purchase approved

The board approved the purchase of a 10-wheel International truck and a sander. The truck will be purchased on state bid for $106,789 and the sander will cost around $8,000.
