Sara Errington Staff writer Excavators digging up soil
around the former Gulino store in Borodino found no underground tanks, but
plenty of contaminated soil, Spafford Supervisor Gordon Ireland
said at the Nov. 7 town board meeting.
"If you took a handful of that dirt, especially if you had a mud
ball of it and broke it apart, you could really smell the gasoline," he
said. The town is trying to acquire the property for a community center,
but doesn't want it if it poses a liability risk, Ireland said.
"If they give us a clean bill of health, then we can sit down and
talk about ownership," Ireland said.
In 2001, the town received $90,000 in Community Development funds
to help build a community center.
Purchase approved
The board approved the purchase of a 10-wheel International truck
and a sander. The truck will be purchased on state bid for $106,789 and
the sander will cost around $8,000. Copyright, 2002, The
