The (Syracuse, NY) April 18, 2002 FORMER GULINO'S STORE IN BORODINO COULD BECOME THE SITE OF A COMMUNITY CENTER. Sara Errington Staff writer Barton & Loguidice is
testing groundwater this week at the former Gulino's store in Borodino, Spafford
Supervisor Gordon Ireland said at the April 11 town board meeting.
The board wants to buy the property to build a community center, but
not if the property is contaminated by old fuel tanks that used to be in
the ground at the main intersection in Borodino. Ireland said he is optimistic that the property will be clean.
Town authorizes supervisor to lease mineral rights
The board authorized Ireland to sign a lease with Triana Energy for
mineral rights on .22 acres of land the town owns near the intersection of
Route 41 and Cold Brook Road.
The town doesn't expect to make much money if natural gas is found, but
not signing the lease would prevent drilling that could bring money to
other property owners in the area.
"There's no use tying up the whole operation for two-tenths of an
acre," Ireland said.
The $300 that the town receives for signing the lease will be put in
the general fund.
Radioactive waste dumped at town transfer station
A mysterious radioactive substance was dumped at the town transfer
station about a month ago, Highway Superintendent Merrill Clark said.
When the trash container was delivered to the Onondaga County
Resource Recovery Agency recycling plant, Geiger counters detected a
radioactive substance.
The town's options were to pay around $10,000 to have DEC workers fish
the radioactive trash out of the container, or to let the container
sit until the material is no longer radioactive.
The town decided on the latter option, Clark said, and by Mid-may the
radiation should be gone.
Clark said resource recovery agency officials believe it is some kind
of radioactive medical waste, but won't know for sure until the trash
is safe to open.
Hearing to air proposal to close road during project
A hearing will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Spafford Town Hall to
discuss closing Masters Road while it is paved.
Half of the road was paved last year.
This year, a half-mile section west of Otisco Valley Road will be
paved. The whole project will cost about $120,000.
A culvert on Howe Road is also being replaced. Copyright, 2002, The Herald Company Purchased for reprint on the Borodino Bullett. ^ Top |
