VETERANS MEMORIAL DRIVE NEARS GOAL
COMMITTEE SAYS IT'S READY TO START DIGGING. THE PROJECT SHOULD BE DONE NEXT SPRING.

Veterans from the town of Spafford will soon have a fitting tribute.

The town veterans' committee has raised about two-thirds of the $40,000 needed to build a memorial park at the Four Corners in Borodino, committee member Johanna Frittelli said at the Sept. 12 town board meeting. Currently, town officials are working on getting electricity to the site so that the flag that will be placed there is illuminated, said committee chair, Councilor Fred Chappell.

The memorial will be on a slightly raised site. At its center will be an obelisk made of granite from Barre, Vt.

"It's been a traditional material for more than 200 years," Frittelli said. Many obelisks in local cemeteries are made of the stone.

A brick walkway will circle the monument, and a flagpole will stand nearby.

The Spafford Area Gardening enthusiasts will plant trees and flower beds around the park.

The classical design of the memorial will complement Borodino's historic architecture, Frittelli said.

The ground is expected to be broken this fall, but the memorial will not be completed until next year.

"We're ready to dig," Chappell said.

DEC looking at Gulino site

The town's purchase of the former Gulino store in Borodino is still on hold while the Department of Environmental Conservation investigates contamination at the site, Supervisor Gordon Ireland said.

Initial tests this summer found pollutants in the soil.

Now, a backhoe is being brought in to dig on the western edge of the property to see if fuel tanks are still buried there.

"Depending on what's in the ground, if it's cost prohibitive, we can't take it," he said.
