Dear Editors:
Dear SR PFeffer and others who are against offshore oil drilling.
The “fix” is not a fantasy. It’s a helping hand.
If anyone is playing on voter’s emotions it is SR Pfeffer’s Sunday letter to the editor. I would like to debate any Democrat, Maffei, Mike Connors, and the other editors of the Post Standard, at the Palace Theatre about the facts about energy in this country. The $ we raise can go to help poor people pay their heating bills.
I am a liberal democrat who finds it sad that fellow Democrats are so uneducated about the energy they use. It is clear from AREA 52’s two years of research, that the Democrats exaggerate every energy issue. They use FEAR more than Bush.
The first issue is this: define energy dependence. Does Pheffer mean total domestic or just imports. This editorial is hard to structure without Pheffer’s intent? So I will be short.
First, no one ever said that increasing oil production in this country by 2 million barrels a day is a panacea. No one ever said this. So stop. It is just bringing production numbers up to there they where twenty years ago.
Second , there is a law that prevents significant quantities of oil from being exported. 10 million barrels per year is exported, most of it going to Canada. Remember we use 7 billion barrels per year. Plus we even import oil from CHINA now.
.
SR Pfeffer says millions of electric cars would cut our oil dependence by 50 %. ( Foreign or domestic? ) Nevertheless, this is not truthful and it plays on the public’s emotions, doesn’t it? Here are the mini-facts and the Post Standard should have recognized this before they enthusiastically printed FIX IS A FANTASY. Here’s the approx. facts for print space. Lets say SR Pfeffer ‘s 5 million electric cars, out of the 140 million registered cars and 100 million trucks, 240million, total, displaces 15 barrels per car per year. Remember we use approximately 135 billion gallons of gas and 45 billion gallons of diesel per year. So how does a few million electric cars, which I love, equal a reduction of “50% “ of our oil dependency, 21 MBD
( million barrels per-day) 7 billion barrels per year? Please explain to me and my friends. So the math is approximately that of 2 billion gallons per year saved because of electric vehicles and not 80 billion, half of what we import? Assuming Pheffer is referring to foreign oil dependency. It takes approx. about 4 MBD to make 80 billion gallons of gas. But we could save this every year if liberal Democrats volunteeringly drove smaller, more fuel efficient cars themselves instead of their record number of SUV purchases over the last 2 decades. Third, the 2005 and 2007 energy bill mandates that
the US produce 35 billion gallons of ethanol-biofuels, by 2025. But remember that our gas consumption for cars alone will grow, thanks to hypocriticial Democrats buying SUV’s and v6 luxury cars, to 172 billion gallons by 2022.
Also, the facts say that even if you used every acre of farm land, 450 million areas, to grow your biofuels we’d still not be energy independent. Plus there is nothing wrong with importing oil from Canada and Mexico and other nations. Still the EPA and other scientist are writing reports that ethanol worsens air qualities with VOCs. SR Pfeffer should debate fellow Democrats at the Palace Theatre who want to drill offshore. Let us know when you want to let the voters in CNY feel the emotional truth about energy issues.
So yes AMERICA will benefit from any new oil production. Please debate us pro-drilling Democrats at the Palace, SR PHeffer, or clarify your next letter with facts. That’s all us other democrats want before the Nov. election is the facts.
