DAWN JORDAN STRING THEATRE

Presents..."The Dragon of Umshire"

Return Performance at the Grange August 27th, 2002 at 7:00 pm

Dawn Jordan started making puppets when she was ten years old. She's made all the marionettes, forty in all, out of paper mache, styrofoam and bits of cloth. She writes the stories herself, dusting each one with a renaissance brush. Each story is narrated with Dawn's original soundtrack, a mixture of classical, jazz and blues.

Originally the controllers were behind the stage. These days Dawn is trying a new method--  being on stage with the marionettes, dressed in black to blend in with the stage. Dawn admits it can be hard to get people to come out to theater these days, with so much technology, it's easy to sit and watch a video.  She also does a Christmas pageant every year. You can contact Dawn Jordan to bring her magical production to your event or town.

Dawn Jordan's String Theatre performance of "The Dragon Of Umshire", at the Grange building on 7/14, her third time visit to The Grange. She will give a return performance on August 25th (Sunday) at 7:00 PM. Sponsored by the Spafford Area Historical Society.

The story begins...

George the Page (older than the usual), is in love with the King's daughter, Rosebud. The king announced whomever slays the dragon will win his daughter's hand in marriage.

A young knight, Evan, from the other end of the forest, bids goodbye to his mother as he takes off to seek adventure and serve the king. Off he goes through the deep woods, over the green valleys, to see the world...

Evan comes across May, a fair maiden playing her flute. The dragon follows the sound of her music. "A harmless lover of music, but he scares the townspeople of Umshire.

Evan suggests to May that she and the dragon go to live with his mother in her cottage on the edge of the forest, so the dragon will not be slain.

On his new quest to tell the King not to worry about the dragon. Evan arrives at the castle, met by George the page at the gate. King mistakenly thinks the dragon has been slain. He goes off to prepare for Princess Rosebud's upcoming nuptials.

Evan meets the beautiful Rosebud, and they go off on a picnic. The King orders George to find the Maiden May to invite her to the wedding festivities.

George, morose, goes for a late night swim in the moat. " I can't play, I can't compete. She's beautiful and rich. I'm so poor...yet talented." Moral: "It's OK to be poor, if you're talented."

Meanwhile, Evan tells the Princess he did not slay the dragon, he merely came to tell the King the dragon was harmless. Maiden May plays her flute for the townspeople. Dragon is attracted to the sound of the music. Townspeople take off running.

Rosebud tells her father the King she's in love with Page George and she has proposed marriage to him. The wedding is back on, with a quick change of groom.

People made sure the legend was spread throughout the land.

Rosebud opened a tapestry shop to support George.

Maiden May is content living in the cottage playing the flute for the Dragon of Umshire.

Dawn asks an audience member to help pack the marionettes in their individual cloth bags.
