WHAT:
Debate between CCSL and PWC owners
WHERE: Skaneateles Town Board meeting at the
Skaneateles Town Hall
WHEN: Thursday, May 2nd at 7 pm
The Town Board will listen to both sides of the issue
represented by 3 speakers for both sides, each having five minutes to
make their point.
Bill Pavlus, Skaneateles town supervisor: "It is
not a public hearing. Residents can come and listen, but no one else
is allowed to have any comments."
'Pavlus said no law can be passed without a formal
public hearing. The board will decide whether to hold a public hearing
after the May 2nd hearing.' Source:
Skaneateles Press, April 24 (Vol.172, Week 17) "Debate continues
on personal watercrafts," by Deborah West.
Stephen Andranian, representing the American
Watercraft Association, says PWCs are no noisier than other boats, and
no more polluting than other outboard motor boats with similar
horsepower. He says that the newest models are among the cleanest
crafts on the water. He supports the idea of a buffer zone, and says
it is up to each town to customize for their community.
The Citizens for a Cleaner & Safer Lake want the
town to redefine PWCs as "thrillcraft", are asking for a
buffer zone of 1000' (Editor's note: I believe the current
buffer zone is 500'), and they want the town to ban PWCs with 2-stroke
engines in 1-2 years.
CCSL
member Robert Werner said that 'two-stroke engines run on a mixture of
oil and gasoline, and discharge as much as one third of this mixture
unburned into the water. The CCSL had petitions circulating in the
area.
