PAST ISSUES OF NEWSSTAND:

Welcome to the Borodino Bullett Online Newsletter...  Unofficial (sometimes irreverent) Voice for an area of Central New York that almost no one knows exists ... but we're working to change that.

WHERE THE HECK IS BORODINO?
Borodino is a hamlet nestled between two lakes-- Otisco and Skaneateles. The Bullett website serves the residents of the Town of Spafford, and surrounding areas.

SPAFFORD PARTY OFFERS VOTERS CHOICE
For the first time in a long time, Spafford voters will see more choices on the ballot this November 4th. Three Spafford residents have formed a new independent party, known as The Spafford Party this past August 24th. Running on the new Spafford Party ticket are: Richard Malcolm for Town Supervisor; Joyce Barnett, for Town Council; and Linda Sanders for Town Council.

At Wednesday (8/27) night's first organizational meeting of the Spafford Party, members gathered to hone their ideas, and strategize their campaign. During the next few months, candidates will meet-and-greet the community giving many of you a chance to see what they're all about.  The following issues were cited to be key to their platform:

  1. Provide Spafford voters with a choice.

  2. Advocate an open relationship between the community and town government.

  3. Preserve the rural character of the town.

  4. Develop a master plan for development.

  5. Strengthen services.

  6. Create an environment that encourages small business.

The Borodino Bullett encourages it's readers to feel free to discuss their concerns and questions on Joe's Cafe. This is historically an interesting time in Spafford history, and we all have a voice. Spafford is the only town to enroll a new independent party in all of Onondaga County this year.

SPAFFORD HIGHWAY SUPER.  RETIRING
Merrill Clark will retire this year as Spafford Highway Superintendent. At last night's Republican Caucus, Town Councilman Fred Chappell said Clark "probably won't get a gold watch," but he thanks Merrill for all his years of service.

Lisa Valletta said there will be a Retirement Party for Merrill Clark on September 21st at the Borodino Firebarn on Nunnery Rd. from 2:00 - 4:00 pm. Clark said he intends to "get the town pickup as a gift." Jeff Ireland joked they will "reserve a bunk for him in the town barn."

CHEAPER TO MARRY IN SPAFFORD?  Town Clerk, Lisa Valletta reported that 1 marriage license was sold, to Bob Dye. As of August 1st, NYS fees were raised from $20 to $30, including marriage license and certificate. New York State receives $22.50 of this fee; the Town gets $7.50, a decrease of $1.25 per license. Valletta stated other towns are charging $40.  The Board agreed to hold the fee firm at $30.

SEPTEMBER TOWN BOARD MEETING will be held September 11th. These meetings commence about 7:30 PM at the Town Hall, and are open to the public.  See what's going on in the town, make a suggestion, or make some noise. Sometimes the masses get cookies with the free coffee. The board holds their budget meeting September 18th.

METAL DAY: THIRD SATURDAY OF THE MONTH THRU OCTOBER -- The Town pays $135 for a "metals" container each month. Although it's not intended for construction debris, or 'entire pieces of machinery,' there is some concern over possible misuse of the bin. Supervisor Ireland said there "ought to be some unwritten rule, if you can't lift it, you can't dump it."

CORRECTION: Previously I reported that Gordon Ireland said burial sites were available at Borodino Cemetery. The cemetery plots mentioned are actually in Spafford Cemetery on Cold Brook Road, not Borodino

CORRECTION:  The Spafford Transfer station closes at 4 PM not 5 pm, all year. [see Town page]

CORRECTION:  It was reported that the amount of donations collected for the Spafford Veterans Memorial was $6760.18. This amount is actually closer to $6500.00.

SPAFFORD TOWN NEWSLETTER
Lisa Valletta says her next town newsletter will hit the mailboxes sometime in October, and will include the next SAHS (Spafford Area Historical Society) newsletter. **Deadline for submission of articles for the SAHS newsletter is September 18.

FAMILIAR FACES CHOSEN BY REPUBLICANS
Last night's Republican Caucus at Spafford Town Hall, deftly chaired by Grace Grenga, saw the nomination of many familiar faces. A crowd of 60 or so turned out for last night's Republican Caucus. The Republicans were well-behaved, except for one moment when Grace Grenga slammed a book down on the table to call them to attention so she could speak.

  • Gordon Ireland nominated for Town Supervisor (ran unopposed, nominated by Donald Becker)

  • Lisa Valletta nominated for Town Clerk (ran unopposed)

  • Billy G. Vinzant nominated for Town Council (ran unopposed, nominated by Lisa Valletta)

  • C.J. Parsons won Town Council (nominated by Jeff Ireland) over Cherry Randall by a slim margin (35 votes to 27). C.J. Parsons later joked that he's "looking forward to being code enforcement officer" again.

  • Carl Wiers knocked out Bob Dye for Highway Superintendant

  • Carol Bourke nominated for Tax Collector (ran unopposed, nominated by Barb Randall)

  • Alternates chosen: Fran Randall, Brenda Collard, and Cherry Randall.

Jim Murphy, 6th District County Legislator for the last 4 years, thanked the town for it's past support. Murphy is running unopposed on the Republican/Conservative ticket. He said that Republican support is needed for Don Colon who is running for Town Comptroller. [positions to be filled 2002]

Gordon Ireland stood next to speak, saying "Jim Murphy has done a good job and Republicans should give him continued support. " Ireland cited projects he has "in the works"-- a new water district for '80 houses that need water,' the Bacon Hill Road project, and an $89,000 grant application he has submitted to "help out the Historical Society".

"We have a good town board, and we will continue to have a good town board. Money for these projects doesn't come easy", Ireland said. "We've worked for it. And we can continue to work for you if you support us."

MAKING SPAFFORD A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE

The committee has decided to continue work towards the completion of the Veterans Memorial park, now that donations have been received from the community. SLALOM SKI OF SKANEATELES LAKE A SUCCESS
Ryan Phillips is a Marcellus high school student who wanted to do something to help the community. So his mother suggested that he do what he does best---water ski. Ryan water-skied the entire 16 mile length of Skaneateles Lake August 2nd, starting at Glen Haven, and ending at the Skaneateles village dock -- raising almost $2,000 to benefit the Spafford Veterans Memorial.
