TRIPLETS BORN AT FESKO DISCOVERY CENTER SPAFFORD VETERANS MEMORIAL Gordon Ireland says, "we wanted a memorial. But we didn't have a site." The HUD property (at the four corners of Borodino, corner of Rt. 41 and Nunnery Rd.) "One thing led to another", and the town was able to obtain the site. Ireland says the Director of HUD was very helpful, also a wounded Viet Nam veteran. [Editor's note: see "before, during demolition, and after" photos here.] With the arrival of spring, work will begin again. Gordon Ireland, with the help of "half of Spafford" installed the 30 foot flag pole Thursday, March 27. The American flag will be raised soon. If funding is available, we hope to complete most of the project by this coming Memorial Day. Volunteers have been working for the past several years toward the goal of establishing a veterans memorial park in "downtown" Borodino. A history of this project can be seen on this website, and we will continue to document it's progress. Upcoming work will include filling in trenches that have settled, grading and seeding the lawn areas, and seeking quotes for the brick walkways. The list of volunteers continues to grow. Paul Hood surveyed the site. The site plan was prepared by landscape architect, Salvin Strods. The lot was graded last summer by Bob Dye. Last October Town of Spafford workers poured footings for the monument. Rusty Snell has installed electric service. The flagpole was purchased by H.C. Bainbridge in Syracuse. The white granite obelisk has been ordered from North Carolina Granite Corp. thanks to Eric Johnson, another local resident lending a skillful hand. The monument inscription will read: "In grateful tribute to the men and women of Spafford who have served to preserve our freedom." If you would like to pledge a donation or make a dedication please contact Gordon Ireland 673-3826, Woody Woodmansee 636-8103, or Fred Chappell 673-3882. HONOR ROLL II |
