ABOUT THE CANDIDATES:

MESSAGE FROM NEIGHBORS FIRST

Neighbors First is endorsing the Republican slate of candidates for one main reason: we are confident that they can do the job in the manner in which we believe it should be done. These folks have established credentials and records to prove they can do the job and are decent human beings who will serve in the best interests of the entire town. If we were not absolutely sure about that, we would have floated our own slate of candidates. The party's platform is pretty simple and straightforward:

(a) a planning process that is forward-thinking yet considerate of the rights of property owners. We're not supportive of a "blueprint" type plan; rather, we want a process that identifies townwide priorities, provides "mechanisms" for protecting farmland, prepares the town's infrastructure for the future, and guards against undesirable types and rates of development. We are adamant that this kind of planning goes way beyond "5-acre zoning", which we do not support in principle.

(b) an unobtrusive town government that is fiscally responsible; no unnecessary spending (period).

(c) a civil board that will attend to the Town's business in a polite and professional manner; we want to restore our good name in the eyes of our neighboring Towns and the County; we can agree to disagree, and at the end of the day still be friends and neighbors.

It's my understanding that volunteers had no problem getting signatures to validate the independent party petition. We take that to mean that there are a lot of like-minded souls out there who feel the way we do about our Town government.   Brian Underwood

NEW RESCUE TRUCK FOR BORODINO FIRE DEPT    The Spafford Fire District Board of Fire Commissioners voted September 21, to purchase a new rescue truck chassis for the Borodino rescue truck. They agreed to spend an amount not to exceed $45,000 from the Spafford Fire District MBR Reserve Fund.

" My name is Rick Fesko, Democratic candidate for town board. I am running for three main reasons:

  1. Agriculture has been the back bone of this town and I want to keep it that way.

  2. There has been a break down in communication in the town and I think I can help restore it to friendlier days.

  3. Updating of zoning is huge if I am to continue to farm. "

Paper trail makes it easier to sell grave sites, town board says.
Thursday, October 20, 2005, Neighbors West
By Diana LaMattina
The Spafford Town Board created a paper trail for people interested in selling grave plots they've bought in either the Borodino or Spafford cemetery.

The paper trail hopefully will lessen confusion by creating evidence of when or if a plot deed has transferred owners. In the past, officials often had to take people at their word of who now owned a plot when a problem occurred, said Supervisor Gordon Ireland.

The resolution passed Oct. 13 requires documents of transfer that will be kept permanently at the town hall.

Schoeneck reappointed

Also, the Spafford Town Board reappointed Dave Schoeneck to the board of assessments for another term. During his previous term, Schoneck had an admirable record of being present at nearly all meetings. He also is interested and knowledgeable about real estate, Ireland said.

Councilor Joyce Barnett, a candidate for town supervisor, was the only member opposing Schoneck's reappointment. She lamented that other candidates were not encouraged to apply because the vacant position was not publicized.

Lower speed limit

A new speed limit soon will be posted along Bockes Road. The 40 mph signs will replace the state maximum of 55 mph that drivers currently are supposed to follow. The town board opted to lower the speed limit in hopes of better protecting pedestrians and children in the area.

The new limit has been approved and signs will appear in the next few weeks, after a few paperwork procedures are followed.

Budget hearing Nov. 10

The board agreed to have a public hearing on the 2006 budget at 7 p.m. Nov. 10 at Spafford Town Hall, 1984 Route 174.
