Recreation Committee Meeting

June 24, 2006

Town Hall  09:30 AM

Five members present: Merrill Clark, Barry Kahn and Joyce Green--plus two new members: Jim Clark and Sid Hoover

Discussion on past month’s activities:

            Scott Park

1.)    Merrill Clark said the Scott Park project is at a standstill. They will soon clear fallen brush from the new trail.

2.)    Joyce Green mentioned there is poison ivy along the trail, and volunteered to spray it with Roundup.

3.)    Merrill said Spafford dump permits would be used to identify Spafford residents at Scott Park.

      Spafford Forest (Craig Road)

4.)    Merrill said Monday morning June 26 Onondaga County would bring 5 loads of crusher run. A work crew will gather to lay fabric down first; volunteers welcome. The town will provide the equipment to spread the stone, at no cost to the town except for the manpower to run the equipment. The county said if gravel is needed to topdress, to just let them know and they will provide it.

      High Hickory (Richard Rd.)

5.)    Merrill said he would look into obtaining trail markers.

6.)    Discussion regarding Green Spaces grant application to request materials to build picnic benches, and for a sign to identify High Hickory. (Add names of donators to the sign?) Request will be for two tables for High Hickory, and two tables for Spafford Forest. Joyce Green will write and submit the grant. Merrill said that since this grant will go through the town, instead of using the Borodino church's 501(c)3, a letter from Lisa showing Merrill's appointment by the town as the Head Muckymuck for the Recreation committee was required, as well as Webb's signature as Town Supervisor. (Cost estimated at $150 per table, for 4 tables; $150 for a sign=Total Grant Request of $750)

7.)    Merrill talked to county legislator, Jim Rhinehart about his assistance in forming a state (public) boat launch. Leg. Rhinehart said he is still working on it. Merrill talked to the DEC in Cortland. They own property on Otisco Lake across from Oak Hill Rd. to Otisco Valley Rd. Another possible site: Otisco Lake Marina

Causeway (Churchill Hill and West Valley Rds.)

8.)    Discussion on future improvements to the Causeway. Merrill said the Scott project and various hiking trails were first priority. He said that the Otisco Valley Neighborhood Watch would love to see the causeway improved, and it wouldn't take much to add a parking area and picnic bench to this site in the future. Noted that there are several agencies involved (Syracuse and Otisco Lake Water Authorities are two) which may prove complicated. Note: this is also a county snow plow turn-around.

Next Meeting

The next meeting is scheduled for July 29th at High Hickory on Richard Rd. at 9:30 a.m.

Secretary, Joyce Green
