RECREATION COMMITTEE

Meeting Minutes 3/25/06

9:30- 12:30 a.m.

Committee was renamed the Recreation Committee by Supervisor Webb Stevens.

Members in attendance: Lauri Clark, Merrill Clark, Marilyn Mowry, Frank Moran, Dave Miller, and Joyce Green.

Chairman Merrill Clark talked about the last Scott Town Board meeting; Scott is going ahead with improvements on the lake park. They’re scheduling their events for their summer program.

Merrill talked about the last Spafford Town Board meeting. Monthly reports need to be added to the board agenda. “Committee Reports” should be added to each month’s agenda.

Dave Miller suggested we recommend to Webb that the committee be recognized as an official Parks & Recreation Department, with all committees under this umbrella. Dave asked Webb to join the meeting, but declined Dave’s suggestion. With an approved board amendment, he would be willing to recognize this committee as a Recreation Department, but not with the word “Parks” in it.

Dave Miller brought in the map of the Marcellus Snowmobile Trail. They are working on getting NYS to recognize their established trails, hoping to make them part of the NYS trail system. Trail markers are in place now. (If accomplished, this may bring in $450 per mile per year for maintenance.)

Marilyn Mowry said that a canoe access spot opened on Rt. 11 in Marathon this year.

Other spots mentioned:

High Hickory on Richard Road-- owned by Save the County. There is no parking, no sign.

High Vista

Spafford Forest on Coldbrook and Craig Roads-- owned by Onondaga County.

Frank Moran suggested a warden to oversee these areas. Webb Stevens said he has considered hiring a constable. Dave Miller said the Fire Departments are often called to break up drinking parties, and put out pallet fires in more remote locations.

Frank Moran offered to make an appointment for interested committee members to meet with him and Steve Whalen from Onondaga County.
