Although Mary Chappell has lived in Spafford for 35
years, her shop "In Wood" is brand new, having recently opened
this past July. A former physical education teacher, and
Varsity-level soccer and volleyball coach in Marcellus, Mary converted a room in
her house to her new shop.
Mary is not new to wood carving. She says she was
inspired by work she saw in the 1970's in Lake Tahoe carved from redwood. She
began carving using redwood, which is soft, with practically no grain. Her work
these days uses Maple, Walnut and Butternut (from their own woods.) She is
completely self-taught, and says she considers her work 75% art and 25%
craft items. She prefers birds and other nature oriented themes.
She is a member of East Village Arts and
Marcellus-Skaneateles Art Guild. Over the years her work has been sold in Gallery on the
Lake, the Hitching Post, the former Evergreen, and the Country Cabin--shops in
Skaneateles.
