2001-2002

It started as an idea six years ago... when Gordon Ireland, Robert Sharp, and John Butler met at the home of Woody Woodmansee to assemble an honor roll of veterans from World War II up to the present. Many meetings followed - taking several years to complete the project. The Honor Roll is displayed on a wall of the Spafford town hall.

Gordon Ireland says, "we wanted a memorial. But we didn't have a site." The HUD property (at the four corners of Borodino, corner of Rt. 41 and Nunnery Rd.) "One thing led to another", and the town was able to obtain the site. Ireland says the Director of HUD was very helpful, and also a wounded Viet Nam veteran.

With the arrival of spring,  work will begin again. Gordon Ireland, with the help of "half of Spafford" installed the 30 foot flag pole Thursday, March 27, 2002.  The American flag will be raised soon. If funding is available, we hope to complete most of the project by this coming Memorial Day.

Volunteers have been working for the past several years toward the goal of establishing a veterans memorial park in "downtown" Borodino. Upcoming work will include filling in trenches that have settled, grading and seeding the lawn areas, and seeking  quotes for the brick walkways.

The list of volunteers continues to grow.  Paul Hood surveyed the site on Easter morning 2002. The site plan was prepared by landscape architect, Salvin Strods. The lot was graded last summer 2001 by Bob Dye. Last October 2002, Town of Spafford Highway Dept. workers poured footings for the  monument. Rusty Snell has installed electric service. The flagpole was purchased by H.C. Bainbridge in Syracuse. The white granite obelisk has been ordered from North Carolina Granite Corp. thanks to Eric Johnson, another local resident lending a skillful hand. The monument inscription will read:  "In grateful tribute to the men and women of Spafford who have served to preserve our freedom."

The Spafford Veterans Memorial Committee plan to erect a Veterans Memorial in "downtown" Borodino at the corner of Nunnery and East Lake Roads on the site of an demolished apartment house has made great strides since the committee was formed in 2001.

List committee members: Johanna Frittelli (organized the fundraiser at the Cherrywood Inn), Gordon Ireland (wrote grant request for Federal $10,000 awarded, Fred Chappell (our chairman), Joyce Green (wrote grant request for State awarded $5,000, Woody Woodmansee (co-originator of the Memorial concept), Frank Moran (spearheaded with friend the tshirt sale and slalom ski fund drive, and Joyce Barnett.

Spafford Highway Department, Bob Dye, topsoil guy, Bill Vinzant (backhoe), Roger Green installed pump, faucets, and water lines.

Since 2001, committee members have  received estimates for the 11-1/2' foot tall white granite obelisk, ornate wrought iron fence, brick walkways, benches, a 30' flag pole, and landscaping.

The Spafford Veterans Memorial Committee sent letters to legislators seeking financial assistance, but they stilll will need to call on the community for support to make this project a success. See the published news of two grants recently awarded for this project, by Senator John DeFrancisco ($10,000) and Assemblyman Hal Brown ($5,000), as well as donations from private citizens.  To date almost $20,000 has been raised toward the estimated goal of $30,000.

Condemned in 1996 and left vacant, this apartment house on corner of Nunnery Road and Route 41 in Borodino was purchased several years ago for $1 from HUD by the Town of Spafford.
